"This book is a valuable work synthesizing some of the major thinkers of the 20th century on the subject of historical and scientific knowledge. For historians, philosophers and scientists it is an admirably clear introduction to a difficult but important topic."
—David Gross, Professor of History, University of Colorado
Why has historicism returned to contemporary philosophical thinking? The concept of "historicism" holds that systems of thought are determined by frameworks which can only be uncovered retrospectively; yet since that condition also holds for the present, historicism has traditionally been associated with skepticism, problems of self-reference, and relativism. In his famous diagnosis of "the poverty of historicism" Karl Popper attacked what he considered its dangerous influence in the modern world. In more recent philosophy, however, historicism has re-emerged and is often associated with such thinkers as Thomas Kuhn and Michel Foucault and with debates about the history of science and culture.
A critical account of the case for historicism from Popper to Foucault, Historicism and Knowledge shows the viability of an historicist account of knowledge by replying to traditional objections and the need for defenses of realism and reference at the heart of most alternatives to historicism. The book will provide new insights to those in philosophy as well as literary criticism, intellectual history, history of science, and cultural criticism.
Robert D'Amico is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Florida. He is the author of Marx and Philosophy.
